To remain competitive amid the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs), traditional powertrain manufacturing plants must adapt from high-volume, dedicated production to high-mix, low- to medium-volume manufacturing as original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In this context, the formulation and selection of process parameters and operation sequences in crankshaft production present significant challenges, as they are both complex and time-consuming. This study proposes an innovative approach to smart process planning for crankshaft machining lines using multi-turret machines. The focus is on automating process planning through multi-objective optimization of key decision variables, including process parameters, operation sequencing, and tool allocation on turret magazines. The primary objectives are to minimize both machining and non-machining time, reduce production costs through improved tool life management, and enhance product quality by optimizing surface roughness.By automating these critical decision-making processes, the proposed framework reduces reliance on manual intervention and supports efficient mass customization in modern manufacturing environments.
